Free School Meals

From 1 April 2018, the Department for Education has changed the eligibility criteria for free school meals by introducing an earnings limit for Universal Credit (UC) cases. The revised eligibility criteria can be found at https://www.sthelens.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals

To protect households moving onto Universal Credit, transitional protection has been introduced. This will apply to pupils in receipt of free school meals on 1st April 2018 or who become eligible for free school meals after this date. Under transitional protection pupils will remain eligible for free school meals until the rollout of UC has been completed (31 March 2022 *) and then to the end of their current phase of education, i.e. primary or secondary school. Please note that transitional protection only applies to the child and not to the household. As such, there may be circumstances where one sibling in a household may be eligible for free school meals due to transitional protection and another isn't.

The Department for Education has issued the following guidance: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/free-school-meals-guidance-for-schools-and-local-authorities
