Austin's Butterfly in Year 6

Lesson: Personal, Social and Emotional Education

Class: Year 6 Year: 2022 - 2023

If you come to visit our classroom, you will notice that our reading corner is home to a kaleidoscope of butterflies (the actual collective noun for butterflies!).

To begin our exciting year together, we looked at the story of Austin, a young American boy who was able to draw a stunning picture of a butterfly through repetition, and specific and constructive feedback. We took from his story that a first attempt at something is rarely, if ever, the best we will ever manage, and that it is OK to try and try again.

By relating Austin's story to our 'learning pit', we decided that if something at first is tricky, by persevering and show resilience, we will make quick and pronounced improvement. The butterflies on our walls are the 5th, 6th and sometimes 7th drafts we drew of local Lancashire butterflies (Mr Badley's favourite is the orange tip- can you spot it?).

Every time we sit down to read, we are reminded of our own amazing progress, and what we are capable of when we are resilient.
